Reflashing Firmware at Home

I have an Aranet 4 Home device, which has the same failure seen in other posts on this forum - the e-ink screen is stuck on the "dead battery" logo, even after days with no battery in. Putting fresh batteries in give a brief red light flash from behind the battery compartment, indicating a firmware load error.
Do I need to RMA it, or is there a way as a home user I could open up the device and re-flash the firmware myself, perhaps using a JTAG header or similar?
